I know that wedding businesses, including photographers are seeing a downturn in the number of bookings and sales they are getting. I am in contact daily with many wedding businesses, and with the exception of the lucky few, the recession is hitting the wedding sector quite hard and it's not yet getting any better.

I do see many professional photographers who have been in the business for many many years, having to cut their prices to keep the bookings coming in. A trend at the moment seems to be offering Free pre-wedding shoots. I guess this is a good deal for the client and gives the photographer a chance to show the client the quality of their work, and of course give the photographer a chance to pitch to the client face to face.

For a long time now there has been newbie photographers coming into the business offering cut price deals, and a really low price does often blinker the clients judgement, making them more likely to end up with perhaps lower quality results from a less experienced photographer. However, this happens in many professions.

I am strong believer that customer satisfaction and word of mouth and referalls are our biggest marketing tools. At the end of the day, those that provide quality will likely still be in business beyond the credit crunch.
